The Friday night hit WWE SmackDown was first aired on August 26, 1999 with a fast-paced theme that was a mixture of techno and rock. The September 11, 2001 episode of WWE SmackDown was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks. It aired live from Houston on September 13, 2001 as the first major and televised event since the attacks. For two weeks, they used red, white and blue for the ring ropes instead of the usual blue and had an American flag on the mini-tron.
On July 7, 2005, suicide bombers attacked London and WWE SmackDown aired a match between the Undertaker and Daivari. The match that was aired had been taped two days earlier. A group of masked men attacked the Undertaker and were identified as “terrorists”. The WWE had many complaints for airing the attack that day.
The year of 2007 has proved to be a good year for WWE SmackDown. On April 20, 2007, SmackDown had its 400th episode in Milan, Italy. On June 8, they made CW history by making a 3-way tie with CBS and ABC in the key ad demographic and on June 22; they made CW history for placing first in the key ad demographic.
